The Distinction Between Celotex PIR Insulation Boards

July 11, 2022 by Renz Andrew

Introduction

Polyisocyanurate (PIR) is a high-performance insulation material used in construction. PIR insulation has excellent acoustic and thermal properties, as well as rigidity, durability, and compressive strength. To achieve the same level of thermal performance, PIR insulation boards are approximately half the thickness of traditional forms of insulation.

Insulation boards are also known as loft boards, foam boards, and rigid foam. They are simple to install and come in a variety of sizes and thicknesses, allowing you to find the best insulation board for your project.

The difference between standard PIR insulation boards manufactured by various companies is the most common question asked of our sales team because plasterboard can be used in so many different ways, both in DIY projects and in larger-scale situations.

Celotex PIR Boards – Classification Changes

A number of modifications have occurred in the classification of Celotex PIR boards within the last 18 months. This was mostly due to the lambda values of Celotex products and the associated compliance concerns. But what exactly were the changes, and how did they affect you? We've put up a quick introduction to the changes in Celotex PIR board classes and what they mean here at Insulation Superstore.

Celotex statement – November 2017

Celotex issued a statement in November 2017 outlining recent compliance difficulties with its 4000 and 5000 product lines. The statement applied to products manufactured between 2009 and October 2017, and possibly before.

The problem with the Celotex PIR boards 4000 and 5000 was that the declared lambda value was overstated by 0.001 W/m/K2 in the 4000 range and 0.001-0.002W/m/K2 in the 5000 range.

What is Lambda Value?

The lambda value is used in insulation products to determine the product's insulating capacity. The lower the lambda value, the better the insulation performance of the product. The lambda value is used to compute a product's R-value, which describes its thermal resistance. The greater the R-value, the stronger the insulating characteristics and the greater the barrier to heat transmission.

What Did This Mean For Celotex Products?

Because the lambda values of the 4000 and 5000 Celotex products were underestimated, the goods were declared to be more insulating than they actually were. As a result, Celotex took the time to review and retest their products in order to develop an updated system and classification procedure.

As a result, Celotex modified the classes of some of their goods to comply with the BBA certification. The following products have changed:

  • All XR4000 goods, GA4000 products with a thickness greater than 100mm, and Crown-Bond and Crown-Fix products in the 4000 and Crown categories will stay unchanged. These would have a lambda value of 0.022 W/mK stated.
  • All other existing 4000 range products (TB4000, GA4000, PL4000, and CW4000) made after December 2017 would be marketed as the Celotex 3000 series. These would have a lambda value of 0.023 W/mK2 stated.
  • Any products in the 5000 price bracket would be halted.

Celotex update – December 2018

Celotex issued additional updates in response to changes in the manufacturing and categorization processes. The insulating capabilities of items had been enhanced to reflect the previously understated lambda values.
As a result, all goods that had been reduced to the Celotex 3000 range have now been restored to the Celotex 4000 range. The Celotex 5000 series, on the other hand, is still on hold for additional examination.

Which Celotex PIR boards do you need?

We have a variety of Celotex PIR boards available at Insulation Superstore.

The 4000 series consists of multi-purpose rigid insulation boards that can be utilized in a variety of applications such as pitched roofs, flat roofs, solid masonry walls, floors, and more. Choose TB4000 for boards 12-40mm thick, GA4000 for boards 50-100mm thick, and XR4000 for boards 110-200mm thick.

The CW4000 products have been designed specifically for partial filling of hollow walls if you are seeking for insulation boards for cavity walls.

The Price Of Celotex Insulation Boards

Insulation Superstore is continually exploring for ways to supply our clients with high-quality insulation materials at our renowned low pricing.

Celotex is a world leader in the production of insulation boards, generally referred to as PIR boards. PIR insulation boards are becoming increasingly popular around the world as the demand for a thin, easy-to-install, and high-performance insulation product develops. Celotex offers a wide range of insulation boards for use within buildings, including GA4000 and TB4000, which are ideal for standard, multi-purpose insulation, CW4000, which is designed exclusively for use within cavity walls, and XR4000, a high-performance premium insulation board.
